Softly, slowly, invitationally, Jonah 1

Big projects can be depressing.

It is very important no to be in a hurry. I got a free book yesterday and another for $.99 but they required me to install the free Logos package. And I expect I can only read them on my computer. I have a reader but it isn't very useful. I have a phone but I expect that Logos does not support it and anyway, would I read Child's big commentary on Isaiah on a phone. Not likely. But this is a useful book since I want to take on Isaiah over the next year and a half and at least I won't have to lug it from the library and worry about returning or renewing it. So we'll see.

Also, God's project in purchasing the world - that's a big project. Do you think he gets depressed? Maybe that's a message out of the Noah story. Ah, let's not go there. Zealots everywhere.

I have a few chapters not posted and I think they can stay that way until, a piece at a time, they get where they need to be. But here is Jonah 1 again. I was working on a little book related to this story - but how does one get inside of the story without trivializing it. One simply has to do the work. If then I do the work for my reader, ... no, I cannot. The creation of humanity does not work that way.

What format? What content? How much of the work-in-process semantic domain analysis? With or without the Hebrew? With or without the tables that reveal repetition? With or without syllable and letter counts - Bother, said Winnie the Pooh. That algorithm really needs to be available interactively - but to do that I need a commercial level delivery mechanism for the capacity - and I have one, but it is expensive to buy an unlimited license for all my users. So no go without funding. Also it would have to be bullet-proof - quite possible but again it's not a 1 person job. My host software is bullet-proof but my own web-forms are for me. And managing an online system for the public has to be supported with pros, not a 1 person job.

So results are all my reader gets - and reading is a slow process which there is a risk will not happen in a reader. Like creation might be stillborn. God has the same problem. Some people still think Jonah was swallowed by a whale. Well, he wasn't. It was a fish - a male and a female fish - a whale of a depressing fish. Jonah is us - and the whale is us too. Overwhelming!

That's an odd intro to Jonah 1, eh?

1 And the word of Yahweh happened to Jonah (Dove) child of Amittai, saying, 3e 3g 15
2 ~ Arise - walk to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against her,
for their evil has come up in my face.

3 But Jonah arose and ran away to Tarshish away from the face of Yahweh.
And he went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish, and he gave her fare, and went down into her to go with them to Tarshish away from the face of Yahweh.

4 But Yahweh hurled down a great wind onto the sea, and a great tempest happened on the sea,
and the ship, she was reckoning she was a wreck.

11
5 And the salt-seafarers feared, and they appeal each to his God, and they hurled down their cargo that was in the ship onto the sea, lightening themselves of trifles.
But Jonah had descended into the flanks below decks, and he was laid out unconscious.

19
6 So the pilot approached him and said to him, What's with you - unconscious?
Arise! Call out to your God. Maybe this God will think about us and we will not perish.

23
7 And they said, each to his friend, Look here, let's let the dice fall to know from whom this evil is ours.
And they let the dice fall, and the dice fell to Jonah.

16
8 And they said to him, Make it clear to us, please. Why is it that this evil is ours?
What line of work are you in? And where have you come from? What part of earth? And from this people, who are you?
3d 4B 22
21
9 And he said to them, Hebrew I am,
and I, I fear Yahweh the God of the heavens who made the sea and the dry land.
3e 4C 11
27
10 And the men feared, a great fear, and they said to him, What is this you have done?
For the mortals knew that from the face of Yahweh he had run away, for he had made it clear to them.
3e 4C 22
21
11 And they said to him, What will we do to you that the sea may be quieted for us?
For the sea walked about tempestuously.
3e 4C 19
8
12 And he said to them, Lift me up and hurl me onto the sea and the sea will be quieted for you.
For I, I know that it is from me that this great tempest is upon you.
3c 4C 26
21
13 But the men dug hard to turn to the dry land, but they could not,
for the sea walked about tempestuously against them.
3d 4B 21
11
14 So they called out to Yahweh and said, We beseech you Yahweh, please let us not perish in the being of this man and do not make us responsible for innocent blood,
for you, Yahweh, according to what delights you, you have done.
3e 4C 35
13
15 And they lifted up Jonah and they hurled him down onto the sea,
and the sea stood back from its outrage.
3e 4A 13
9
16 And the men feared Yahweh, a great fear,
and they offered an offering to Yahweh
and they vowed vows.

Like it's really obvious what the recurring words are - but it's better to find them yourself than be told. In fact I am even questioning my former conclusions [2017 especially since years later I change a few glosses!]. The traditional chapters are just fine: the Sea, the Fish, the Change, and the Mess that Jonah really is in. Just look at the highly repeating roots in chapter 1.
