Rereading the first three chapters of the Song of Songs

Also called the Song of Solomon, but I think he does little in it except add some assonance to go with the foxes and the Shulamite. Think of this poem as prayer in which the reader takes on the role of the bride.

After each chapter is a table of words recurring more than twice.

Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth, for better are your caresses than wine.

לְרֵ֙יחַ֙ שְׁמָנֶ֣יךָ טוֹבִ֔ים שֶׁ֖מֶן תּוּרַ֣ק שְׁמֶ֑ךָ
עַל־כֵּ֖ן עֲלָמ֥וֹת אֲהֵבֽוּךָ

For fragrance your oils are good. Oil emptied is your name.
So young women love you.

Where will you recline at noon, lest I become as one who wraps herself by the troops of your companions?

If you do not know for yourself, beautiful among women,

אִם־תָּעִ֧ירוּ ׀ וְֽאִם־תְּעֽוֹרְר֛וּ אֶת־הָאַהֲבָ֖ה עַ֥ד שֶׁתֶּחְפָּֽץ

I have adjured you, daughters of Jerusalem, by the hosts of gazelle or by the hart of the field,
if you arouse or if you arouse this love till it delight.

The voice of my beloved, behold, this one, coming,
leaping over the hills, springing over the hillocks.

Behold, this one, standing behind our embankment, peering through the perforations, blossoming through the grate.

The sparkles have appeared in the land, the time of psalm-singing touches,
and the tone of the turtledove is heard in our land.

The fig tree ripens her early fruit; and the vines with a tender bud give a smell.

Who is this ascending from the wilderness like fronds of smoke,
from incense of myrrh and frankincense from all powders of trading.

Behold his couch, that of Solomon, sixty valiant ones around it from the valiant of Israel.

All of them grasping a sword, expert in war, each his sword on his thigh, from dread in the nights.

A palanquin he constructed for himself, the king Solomon, from the trees of Lebanon.

עַמּוּדָיו֙ עָ֣שָׂה כֶ֔סֶף רְפִידָת֣וֹ זָהָ֔ב מֶרְכָּב֖וֹ אַרְגָּמָ֑ן
תּוֹכוֹ֙ רָצ֣וּף אַהֲבָ֔ה מִבְּנ֖וֹת יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם

Its pillars he constructed of silver, its outspread of gold, its chariot purple,
its centre tessellated with love, daughters of Jerusalem.

Go forth and see, daughters of Zion, on the king Solomon,
the crown that his mother crowned him with on the day he is bridegroom and on the day of the gladness in his heart. S
