Deuteronomy 9

Moses here shows considerable skill in arguing with the unseen. The rationale forgets the limitations of the ancestors, and prevents the liquidation of the present or recalled sin of the people, by means of an appeal to what the rest of the world might say if Yahweh were to fail. This strategy of picking an example of his children to influence the remaining of his children...

children, inheritance, seed ... זרע may be rendered as arm or seed. The context here in verse 29 demands the metaphorical arm, but still could be read as the inheritance of a metaphorical generative capacity.

Is the hand of Yahweh resolute or courageous? Both these glosses fit חזק, the cry that is written when a scribe completes the copying of a book of the Scripture. Courage, resolution, determination, and faithfulness to the unseen, again.

1 Hear O Israel, you cross over the Jordan today, to come to possess nations greater and more numerous than you,
cities great and fortified into the heavens.

that you yourself know, and you, you have heard, Who can be stationed in the face of the children of Anaq?

3 So know today that Yahweh your God himself crosses over before you, a devouring fire, he will exterminate them, and he will subdue them before you,
and you will dispossess them, and eliminate them swiftly, as Yahweh spoke to you.

4 Do not say in your heart, when Yahweh your God has driven them out from your presence, saying, in my righteousness Yahweh brought me to possess this land,
but in the wickedness of these nations, Yahweh dispossessed them from your presence.

5 B Not in your righteousness, or in the uprightness of your heart, are you going to possess their land,
but in the wickedness of these nations, Yahweh your God is dispossessing them from before you, and so that he may place the matter that Yahweh swore to your ancestors, to Abraham to Yitschaq and to Jacob.

11 And it happened at the end of a forty day and forty night span,
Yahweh gave to me the two tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant.

12 And Yahweh said to me, Arise, go down swiftly from this, for your people have impaired themselves that you brought forth from Egypt.
They have turned aside swiftly from the way that you commanded. They made for themselves a molten image.

16 And I saw, and behold, you had sinned against Yahweh your God. You had constructed for yourselves a calf, a molten image.
You had departed swiftly from the way that Yahweh commanded you.

over all your sins that you sinned, to do evil in the eyes of Yahweh, to grieve him.

21 And your sin that you had constructed, the calf, I took and incinerated it in the fire, and I beat it finely ground, until stamped out in the dust,
and I cast its dust into the wadi that descended from the hill.
