Jeremiah 38

After this chapter I extended the grammar post to see if I had learned anything.

This is somewhat depressing content. The divisions in Judaic society are quite evident. In this case there does appear to be a real threat. I realize that 'child of' is an odd phrase in English for what are obviously adults and probably male. But if you prefer, just substitute ben. It helps to remember that these adults were also children at one time, perhaps even doted on. What turns someone from the child into the adult?

1 And Shepatyah child of Mattan, Gedoliah child of Pashur, and Yukal child of Shelemyah, and Pashur child of Malchiah,
heard the things that Jeremiah was speaking to all the people, saying,

2 ~ Thus says Yahweh, One who persists in this city will die by the sword, in scarcity, and by pestilence,
and one who goes out to the Chaldeans will live. And it will be for it, its very self as spoil, and it will live.

4 And the nobility said to the king, Let this man be put to death, please, for so he is making slack the hands of the soldiers of the battle, those still here in this city, and the hands of all the people, to speak to them according to these words.
For this man is not searching for peace for this people but rather for hurt.

Yahweh lives who made for us this integrity. I will not put you to death, and I will not yield you into the hand of persons these which seek your integrity.

I am anxious about the Judeans that are fallen to the Chaldeans, lest they give me into their hands and they ill-treat me.
3c 4C 15

20 And Jeremiah said they will not give.
Hear, if you will, with the voice of Yahweh, which I will speak to you, so it will be good for you and you will live.
3e 4C 11
27
וְאִם־מָאֵ֥ן אַתָּ֖ה לָצֵ֑את

And they will say, Those with whom you were at peace incited you and overpowered you. Sunk in the swamp, your feet are repulsed.

for by the hand of the king of Babel you will be arrested, and this city you will have incinerated in the fire.
3e 4C 27
20
24 And Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, Let no one else know these words, and you will not die. 3d 3g 26

25 But if the nobility hear that I did speak with you, and they come to you, and they say to you, Make it clear, please, to us, what you have spoken to the king. Do not conceal from us, and you will not die.
Also what the king spoke to you.
3c 4B 52
10
וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ אֲלֵיהֶ֔ם מַפִּיל־אֲנִ֥י תְחִנָּתִ֖י לִפְנֵ֣י הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ

26 Then you say to them, I let my supplication fall in the presence of the king,
not to have me returned to the house of Jonathan to die there.

27 And all the nobility came to Jeremiah and asked him. Then he made evident to them according to all these words that the king commanded,
and they kept silent about it, so the matter not was heard.

28 And Jeremiah settled in the court of the cell until the day that Jerusalem was conquered.
And there he was when Jerusalem was conquered.
