Genesis 50

For the record, there is no punishment in Bob's Bible. I only just noted this. My bias is clear. פקד is never translated as punish as it frequently is in the KJV. Nor do I use this word for any of the other roots that it is used for like יסר or נכר or ענשׁ or עוה or רעע. Now I ask you, did that generation have punishment on the brain? How can you allow 6 unrelated stems to converge on the word punish?

No wonder the Christian world is distorted by the notion of penal substitution.

No soul, no repentance, no punishment in Bob's Bible. It's not that I know anything, but when I read, I do not write what I know is undecidable by the translator.
  • No soul because soul, lovely though the word is, it is not a bodiless substance that lives on after death. The problem with this Greek idea is the implied linearity of time. It also denies the body. It is heresy. [i.e. it is a choice that I don't choose.]
  • No repentance, because the word, important though it is, has come to mean a psychological torture chamber.
  • No punishment, because important though discipline and discipleship is, punishment is not part of it, rather it is governance. I do not deny pain or suffering or consequences but punishment is the imposition of a distorted human violent action that is not in the mind of God.
I wonder how many other words I have failed to use. They uncover my assumptions better than the words I have used.

Here are my glosses so far for the stems (aka roots) above which KJV and others butcher as punish, (excluding רעע which we explored here)

יסר bewilderment(1), chasten(9), chastened(6), chastening(26), chastens(5), mentor(2), mentored(3), mentoring(7), tutored(1), warn(2), warned(1), warning(3)
Neko(5), stricken(4), strike(52), striker(1), strikes(10), striking(5), struck(145)
Adah(9), assembly(77), deck(1), decked(3), decks(1), given testimony(1), menstrual(1), near testimonies(1), testimonies(33), testimony(38)
ענשׁ amerced(1), fine(1), fined(2)
פקד conscript(1), conscripted(4), conscription(4), entrust(3), entrusted(17), given visitation rights(1), make officiate(1), make visit(3), office(1), officer(4), officers(4), offices(1), officials(2), officiating(2), precepts(24), visit(38), visitation(6), visited(12), visiting(8), visits(1)

Now for a change of pace, would you like to have been visited by God, as Joseph notes will happen to his brothers? (Note the anticipation of Peter Rabbit in this text.)

7 And Joseph went up to entomb his father.
And went up with him all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt,

but their little ones, and their flocks, and their herds, they left behind in the land Goshen.
3e 4B 12
16
9 And went up with him both chariot and cavalry,
so the camp was very glorious.
3e 4B 12
10
10 And they came to the threshing-floor of the Brierpatch that was across the Jordan, and wailed there a great wailing, and very glorious,
and he made lament for his father seven days.
3c 4B 31
12
11 And the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the lament at the threshing-floor of the Brierpatch, and they said, A glorious lament this is for Egypt.
Therefore he called its name, Lament of Egypt, that is across the Jordan.
3e 4C 33
18

13 And his children bore him toward the land of Canaan, and they entombed him in the cave of the field of the Makpelah,
that Abraham purchased with the field, to hold fast as a tomb, from Ephron the Hittite before Mamre.

14 And Joseph returned toward Egypt, he and his brothers and all those who went up with him to entomb his father,
after they had entombed his father.
3e 4C 24
8

15 And the brothers of Joseph saw that their father had died, and they said, Would not Joseph oppose us?
And to get back, he will return to us all the evil with which we rewarded him.
3e 4C 21
19
16 And they gave command to Joseph, saying,
Your father commanded in the face of his death, saying,
3e 4B 8
11
17 Thus you will say to Joseph, Beseeching, lift up, please, the transgression of your brothers and their sin, for they recompensed you with evil. So now, lift up, please, of the transgression of the servants of the God of your ancestors.
And Joseph wept when they spoke to him.
3e 4C 41
10
18 And his kin went also and fell before him,
and they said, Behold us, yours, as servants.
3e 4B 12
12
19 And Joseph said to them, Do not fear,
for am I in the guise of God?
3c 4A 12
9
20 Though yourselves, you devised for me evil,
God devised it for good, so as to do as on this day to keep alive an abundant people.
3d 4B 10
24
21 So now, do not fear. I myself will nourish you and your little ones.
And he comforted them, and spoke concerning their heart.
3d 4B 19
11
22 And Joseph persisted in Egypt, he and the house of his father,
and Joseph lived a hundred and ten years.
3e 4C 13
11

23 And Joseph saw Ephraim's great grand children.
Even the children of Makir, child of Manasseh, were toddlers on the knees of Joseph.
3e 4C 12
16
24 And Joseph said to his brothers, I am to die,
but God visiting, will visit you, to bring you up from this land to the land that he swore to Abraham, to Yitschaq, and to Jacob.
3c 4C 12
40
25 And Joseph made the children of Israel swear, saying,
Visiting, God will visit you, and you will bring up my bones from here.
3e 4C 13

26 And Joseph died, a child of a hundred and ten years,
and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.
