1 Kings 2

David is candid with Solomon, with some rather astonishing admissions of failure as a father. Bathsheva's intervention is insidious and leads to much bloodshed.

The construction of verse 4 is odd, having two open quotes (לאמר). Joab's daubing of blood (v5) is consistent with the use of נתן for daubing the blood of a sacrifice on the altar.

There is violent work afoot here and no getting around it. Humans are violent in their seizing and establishing of power. The place of Two-Armies  is trad. Mahaniam.

פגע seems to be an understated initial action of the enforcer Benaiah in Solomon's kingdom.

וַיִּקְרְב֥וּ יְמֵֽי־דָוִ֖ד לָמ֑וּת
וַיְצַ֛ו אֶת־שְׁלֹמֹ֥ה בְנ֖וֹ לֵאמֹֽר
1 And the days of David approached death,
and he commanded Solomon his son, saying.

You be resolute and you become someone.

3 And you keep the watch of Yahweh your God to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the instruction of Moses,
so that you may have insight in all that you will do, and all that you will face there.

4 So that Yahweh will raise up his word that he spoke of me, saying, If your children will keep their way to walk in my presence in truth with all their heart and with all their integrity,
saying, There will not be cut off for you a man, from the throne of Israel.

5 And moreover you yourself know what Joab child of Tseruyah had done to me that he had done to the two chiefs of the hosts of Israel, to Abner child of Ner and to Amasa child of Yether, when he slew them and set in place the blood of war in peace,
and daubed the blood of war upon his sash that was on his loins, and on his shoes that were on his feet.

8 And behold, with you is Shimei, a child of Gera of Benjamin, from Bachurim, and he himself denied me with a stilted denial on the day I went to Two-Armies,
and he himself came down to my call at the Jordan and I swore to him by Yahweh saying, I will not put you to death by the sword.

Aand he said, Peace.

5
וַיֹּ֕אמֶר דָּבָ֥ר לִ֖י אֵלָ֑יִךְ

22 And the king Solomon answered, and he said to his mother, and why have you asked Abishag the Shunamite for Adonijah? So ask from me the kingdom for him, for he is my older brother,
and for him, and for Abiatar the priest, and for Joab, child of Tseruyah.

And Solomon sent Benaiah child of Jehoiada, saying, Go. Come across him.
3c 4C 27

And Benaiah returned to the king a word, saying, Thus spoke Joab and thus he answered me.
