Isaiah 10

The sequence in which I do these chapters is almost random now. I pick where there are holes to fill and from the top or from the bottom of the list left to do. It is curious that Isaiah 10 came up shortly after I began Leviticus 6 where the word for burning mass is used to describe the nature of the burnt offering,  for a burning mass on the altar all the night long till the morning. The repetition is striking (verse 17).

For verse 18, there needs to be some alliteration in reading כמסס נסס. The glossaries consider נסס as a hapax, though the stem is used several times as standard.

to let widows be their spoil and to loot orphans.

12 And it will be that when my Lord finds his mark, all his deeds on the hill of Zion and in Jerusalem,
I will make a visit to the fruit of the inflated heart of the king of Ashur, and over the adornment of the exaltation of his eyes.

15 Will the adze adorn itself over the one who hews with it?
Or will the rasp magnify itself over the one elevating it, as a sceptre would elevate itself and the one exalting it, as a rod would exalt itself without wood?

16 ~ Therefore the Lord Yahweh of hosts will send leanness among his stoutest,
and under his glory, a burning mass, a burning mass as a burning mass of fire.

13

17 And the light of Israel will become a fire and his Holy One a flame,
and it will be kindled and it will devour his wild growth and his spikes in one day.
3d 4C 16
16

18 And the glory of his forest and his vineyard from throat to flesh will faint,
and it will be as a decaying standard.
3e 4C 18
7
19 And the residue of the wood of his forest will be numbered,
that a lad could describe them.
3d 4B 9

20 And it will be in that day, the residue of Israel and the secured of the house of Jacob will not any longer lean on the one who strikes them,
but will lean on Yahweh, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.
3d 4C 30
14
21 A residue will return the residue of Jacob,
to the One who prevails.

22 B For though your people Israel were as the sand of the sea, a residue from it will return,
decisive consummation, an overflowing of righteousness.
3e 4C 18
10
23 f For a decisive consummation,
my Lord Yahweh of hosts is doing in close combat with all the earth.
3e 4C 8
17
24 Therefore thus says my Lord Yahweh of hosts, Do not fear, my people inhabiting Zion, from Ashur.
With the sceptre he will strike you, and his rod will lift up against you, in the way of Egypt,
3d 4C 25
21

26 And Yahweh of hosts will rouse against him a scourge like the defeat of Midian at the rock of Oreb,
and his rod is over the sea, and will lift it up in the way of Egypt.
3e 4C 20
16

27 And it will happen in that day his burden will depart from your backside, and his shackle from your neck.
And shackle will be marginalized in the presence of oil.
3e 4C 26

29 They have passed beyond the crossing. Geba is lodging for us.
Apprehensive is Ramah. Gibeah of Saul is withdrawn.

32 f Yet today at Nob to stand,
he will elevate his hand, the hill of the daughter of Zion, the hillocks of Jerusalem.
3e 4C 8
15

and Lebanon in its excellence will fall.

I had a Hebrew teacher briefly who said that my English must make sense. But while this would be nice, it is not always possible. Sometimes the Hebrew doesn't make sense. In the Jerusalem Bible, verse 27 note says corr. Look up the abbreviation and it reads correction or conjectural reading. Everyone guesses in this business, even the pros.  JB takes the part of verse 27 after the atnah and replaces it with: "He advances from the district of Rimmon," making this phrase the beginning of the new section describing the advance of Yahweh, the scourge of Ashur. I checked the Aleppo codex and there is no difference from the Leningrad. The source of the correction is obscure to me. NIV is very amusing: "The yoke will be broken because you have grown so fat." I could use fat for שׁמן. I don't use yoke because it would conflict with another stem that I have glossed as yoke. I used it once only. It is a hapax in Psalms 109.19.
