1 Samuel 9

We have popped into the middle of this story. Saul forgot his wallet so he has to borrow a quarter from his companion.

Verse 9 is like a footnote to verse 11.

Verse 17 - עצר coerce (2) coercion (2) conclave (10) contain (25) detain (8) through coercion (1) - a very odd word to be rendered as rule. (At least in any positive sense.) Positive sense would be מלך or משׁל.

Note also verse 16, נגד herald. Also used as a pre-monarchic office for David (2 Samuel 5.2, 6.21).

Samuel is not in favour of the hierarchic (monarchic) model of governance.

1 And there was man of Benjamin, and his name was Kish, child of Abiel, child of Anguish, child of Bekorat, child of Apyax, child of a man of [Ben]jamin,
valiant and forceful.

2 And he had a child and his name was Saul, choice and fine, and there was no one among the children of Israel better than him,
from his backside, and upward of stature than any of the people.

3 And the donkeys of Kish, the father of Saul, were lost,
and Kish said to Saul his son, Take, please, with you, one from the lads, and arise. Go, seek the donkeys.

Now let us go there. Maybe he will tell us our way that we should go in.

What is with us?

that I will give to the man of God, and he will make clear to us our way.

For a prophet today, before was called the seer.)

13 As you enter the city, so you will find him before he goes up to the high place to eat. For the people will not eat until he comes, for he blesses the sacrifice. So after this, those who are invited will eat.
But now, go up, for him, on this day you will find him.

for I have seen my people, for their outcry has come to me.

19 And Samuel answered Saul and he said, I myself am the seer. Go up before me to the high place, and you will eat with me today,
and I will send you in the morning and all that is in your heart I will make clear to you.
3d 4C 34

20 And about the donkeys that were lost to you today, three days ago, do not set your heart on them, for they are found.
And for whom is all the attraction of Israel? Is it not to you and all the house of your father?

21 And Saul answered and he said, Am not I of Benjamin, the least of the sceptres of Israel, and my family the smallest from all the families of the sceptre of Benjamin?
So why do you speak to me a word like this?
3e 4C 43
13
22 And Samuel took Saul and his lad, and he brought them into the chamber,
and he gave them a place at the head of those who were invited, and they were about thirty persons.
3e 4C 20
19

23 And Samuel said to the slaughterer, Give the portion that I gave you,
that I said to you, Set it by you.
3e 4C 21
13

24 And the slaughterer lifted high the leg and what was upon it to set before Saul, and he said, Behold the residue set before you. Eat, because for an appointed time it was kept for you, when I said, I have invited the people.
And Saul ate with Samuel in that day.
3c 4C 51
13
25 And they descended from the high place of the city,
and he spoke with Saul on the housetop.

9

26 And they rose up early, and it happened as the dawn ascended that Samuel called to Saul to the housetop, saying, Arise and I will send you away.
And Saul arose and they came out, both of them, he and Samuel, outside.
3c 4C 33

27 ~ They descended toward the end of the city, and Samuel said to Saul, Say to the lad that he pass through before us. (And he passed through.)
But you stand as the day requires, that I may report to you the word of God.
